pilates

Originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s and endorsed not only by the Hollywood elite but also by physiotherapists and orthopaedic surgeons worldwide. Pilates is the ultimate exercise for anyone who wants a strong, toned and aligned body.

Pilates works muscles on a focused, deep level, working to strengthen core postural muscles and helping to develop correct body alignment by strengthening the stomach, stabilising the spine and supporting the back.

Pilates is challenging without being strenuous and its focus on muscle isolation (both on mats or with the use of specially designed equipment) makes it suitable for anyone from 18 to 80. Pilates has been found to be especially beneficial for those rehabilitating an injury who need to maintain the body’s strength while recovering.

pilates at triyoga
We have both a state of the art Pilates equipment studio and Pilates mat classes. In the Studio we have specifically developed equipment which primarily uses resistance against springs to isolate and develop specific muscle groups.

Mat classes are taught in a group much like yoga classes, where the individual creates their own body’s resistance and quickly increases endurance and stamina.

Pilates at triyoga is suitable for athletes, beginners and those with back and neck problems alike. It is highly recommended both pre and post natal.

Our Pilates practice is led by Mei Chapman, Aud Asabo and a team of fully qualified teachers - certified by the Pilates Foundation (UK) Limited.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is Pilates?
A: Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s and helps you attain a strong, toned and aligned body. Pilates addresses the entire body by working the deeper muscles in a more focused manner helping to improve your posture, flexibility, strength and coordination as well as toning the abdominal region.

Q: Who can practice Pilates?
A: Like Yoga, Pilates can be practiced by anyone regardless of their age and fitness and it is also used during rehabilitation and for a number of conditions including neck pain, back pain, protruding discs, osteoporosis, MS, repetitive strain injury, whiplash and tennis elbow. At triyoga we regularly work alongside doctors, physio’s, osteopaths and other professionals in treating clients.

Q: How can I start?
A: There are two ‘ways’ to practice Pilates. The first is with specially developed equipment, which works primarily by using resistance to isolate and develop specific muscle groups. The second way is in a mat class using one’s own body strength without equipment. In the Pilates equipment studio you are recommended to start with a one on one session and Pilates mat classes to start with a beginners level (1) class, beginners course or one of our regular workshops.
