homeopathy for hayfever

Hay fever or seasonal allergic rhinitis may seem trivial but try doing a forward bend whilst sneezing with itchy eyes and watery nose!

A large range of over-the-counter and prescription medications are available to treat hay fever and hay asthma. They are mainly antihistamines and steroids. Both work by suppressing the body’s immune response to allergens and therefore need to be taken daily. They bring temporary relief but never get to the root of the problem. Both types of medication can cause side effects, the most worrying of which is sedation. Sedation makes it harder to be effective, it adversely affects, for example, concentration, driving, operating computers and in fact any machinery.

So for many, the hay fever symptoms together with the side effects of conventional medications undoubtedly detract from their quality of life; homeopathy offers an attractive alternative.

I employ two strategies to help hay fever sufferers. One is to prescribe according to the acute symptom picture experienced by the sufferer at the time of prescribing. So, for example, Allium Cepa for those experiencing itchy watery eyes and nose, just like the symptoms caused by peeling onions. This usually involves two half hour appointments over a short period of time.

The other strategy is to prescribe according to the individual’s proneness or susceptibility for hay fever as part of their make-up or constitution. This strategy is aimed at tackling underlying causes and promotes improved overall health, thereby reducing the tendency for recurrent troublesome and uncomfortable symptoms. This constitutional treatment strategy involves an initial 90 minute appointment followed by a number of half hour follow-up appointments scheduled according to progress.

As a treatment strategy it optimises the benefits gained from homeopathy. Firstly, the medicine is individualised to the patient. Every sufferer experiences symptoms in their own unique way. Nasal discharges may be bland, burning, thick or watery. There may be itching in the palate, throat, nose, ears and / or eyes. The lungs may be affected causing wheezing and ‘hay asthma’. Moreover, sufferers usually respond according to the season and the seasonal prevalence of allergen. For example tree pollen in the spring, grass and flower pollens during the summer and fungal spores in the autumn.

Rather than offering blanket suppression of symptoms, homeopathic medicines and naturopathic protocols are selected to relieve a collection of symptoms experienced by each individual patient. Secondly, the treatment may not need to be taken continuously. Often, a short course at the beginning of the hay fever season may give relief for weeks or even months at a time. Thirdly, homeopathic remedies are free from the sedative side effects of conventional antihistamine therapy and other side effects from steroids.

Finally and importantly, the homeopathic treatment of hay fever and rhinitis was investigated scientifically at the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital. The results, published in The Lancet, found homeopathic treatment to be significantly superior to placebo. Worldwide, homeopathy is part of millions of people’s lives, because it works!
